What we offerGuided Studio Tour
Take a guided tour of the Firestick Studio with one of our staff members and explore the workings of a studio and the craft of making pottery. You'll likely see potters throwing on the wheel, kilns being loaded, and beautiful works in the gallery.
Tours are always free. If you would like to schedule a date for a "Play with Clay" workshop experience, you can make up to 5 pieces on the potters wheel.
Play With Clay Workshop
Cost for a 2 hr. workshop is $65 per person, which includes all tools and materials.
If you want one of the potters to "finish" your pieces which includes trimming, bisque fire, glazing and high firing each pot, the cost is $15 per piece and takes about 3 weeks.
After the workshop you have the option to come back and glaze your own pottery after it has been bisque fired. We can hold your pieces up to 3 months to allow more time for you to return. When your pieces come out of the glaze kiln and are ready for pick up, we will call to let you know, or we can box and ship them to your mailing address.
How the 2-hour “Play With Clay” class works!
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARRIVE
THE TOUR
When you arrive we give a tour of the studio. You’ll see examples in the gallery of different kinds of pottery, watch resident potters at work, and get close look at the kilns and glazing area.
Your pieces won’t be fired on the day you make them! We are a highfire reduction studio; the process takes about a month - they will be trimmed, bisqued, glazed and high fired. (these later steps are done by our staff - you do have the option to return and do the glazing yourself)
Then they will be bisque fired (up to 1850 degrees) then glazed (the application of minerals for color,) then high-fired (up to 2350 degrees!) We can also hold your pieces for up to 3 months, if you’d like to come back to glaze your own pieces. There is no additional charge for the glaze class.
LEARNING TO “THROW”
After the tour, you will don an apron, grab a towel and take a seat at a potters wheel. Your teacher will do a 10-minute demonstration, pass out clay and everyone will begin to "throw" on the wheel. We provide clay for each person to make up to 5 pieces; you decide what you want to make.
Your teacher will work with you, hands on, to insure that you come away with some nice pieces.
Afterward, you will decide which of our beautiful glazes you’d like to use or you may to come back within 3 months to do your own glazing.
Firestick is well-known for its beautiful selection of made-in-house glazes.
